Seventeen adjectives in all four forms, and the rule that ties them to their noun: the adjective comes second and agrees in gender and number, whatever the noun's plural looks like. Then לִזְכּוֹר and לִשְׁכּוֹחַ, the hollow verbs whose present is a single syllable, and רוֹצֶה + infinitive — the first construction where the second verb stops conjugating.Dix-sept adjectifs dans leurs quatre formes, et la règle qui les lie à leur nom : l'adjectif vient en second et s'accorde en genre et en nombre, quelle que soit l'allure du pluriel du nom. Puis לִזְכּוֹר et לִשְׁכּוֹחַ, les verbes creux dont le présent tient en une syllabe, et רוֹצֶה + infinitif — la première construction où le deuxième verbe cesse de se conjuguer.
An adjective takes the same four endings as a noun: nothing for the masculine singular, ־ָה for the feminine, ־ִים and ־וֹת for the plurals. What changes from one adjective to the next is the stem underneath. Some keep it (טוֹב, טוֹבָה), some shorten the first vowel to a sheva (גָּדוֹל, גְּדוֹלָה), some open it up (חָדָשׁ, חֲדָשָׁה), and קָטָן doubles its נ (קְטַנָּה). Learn the feminine singular of each and the rest follows from it.L'adjectif prend les mêmes quatre terminaisons qu'un nom : rien au masculin singulier, ־ָה au féminin, ־ִים et ־וֹת aux pluriels. Ce qui change d'un adjectif à l'autre, c'est le radical en dessous. Certains le gardent tel quel (טוֹב, טוֹבָה), d'autres réduisent la première voyelle à un sheva (גָּדוֹל, גְּדוֹלָה), d'autres l'ouvrent (חָדָשׁ, חֲדָשָׁה), et קָטָן redouble son נ (קְטַנָּה). Apprends le féminin singulier de chacun et le reste en découle.

The adjective comes after the noun and agrees with it, so the pair moves as one block: יֶלֶד שָׂמֵחַ becomes יְלָדוֹת שְׂמֵחוֹת with both words changing at once. אִישׁ and אִשָּׁה are the two to watch, because their plurals come from somewhere else entirely.L'adjectif vient après le nom et s'accorde avec lui : la paire se déplace donc d'un bloc, יֶלֶד שָׂמֵחַ devient יְלָדוֹת שְׂמֵחוֹת et les deux mots changent en même temps. אִישׁ et אִשָּׁה sont les deux à surveiller, parce que leurs pluriels viennent d'une tout autre racine.

Same binyan, same shape, one difference that matters: לִשְׁכּוֹחַ ends in ח, and a ח will not carry a segol, so the feminine singular is שׁוֹכַחַת with a patach where זוֹכֶרֶת has a segol. Every pa'al verb ending in ח or ע does this — שׁוֹמֵעַ / שׁוֹמַעַת, פּוֹתֵחַ / פּוֹתַחַת.Même binyan, même schéma, une différence qui compte : לִשְׁכּוֹחַ finit par ח, et un ח ne porte pas de segol, donc le féminin singulier est שׁוֹכַחַת avec un patach là où זוֹכֶרֶת a un segol. Tous les verbes pa'al qui finissent par ח ou ע font pareil — שׁוֹמֵעַ / שׁוֹמַעַת, פּוֹתֵחַ / פּוֹתַחַת.

These are the hollow verbs (ע"ו / ע"י): the middle letter of the root vanishes in the present, leaving a single syllable — גָּר, קָם, שָׁר, שָׂם, בָּא. The infinitive puts it back and takes לָ־, never לִ־, which is the quickest way to recognise the family. Three shapes only: לָ_וּ_ (לָגוּר, לָקוּם), לָ_ִי_ (לָשִׁיר, לָשִׂים) and לָ_וֹא (לָבוֹא). The present has no prefix at all, so a bare שָׁר already means "he sings".Ce sont les verbes creux (ע"ו / ע"י) : la lettre du milieu de la racine disparaît au présent et il ne reste qu'une syllabe — גָּר, קָם, שָׁר, שָׂם, בָּא. L'infinitif la remet et prend לָ־, jamais לִ־, ce qui est le moyen le plus rapide de reconnaître la famille. Trois schémas seulement : לָ_וּ_ (לָגוּר, לָקוּם), לָ_ִי_ (לָשִׁיר, לָשִׂים) et לָ_וֹא (לָבוֹא). Le présent n'a aucun préfixe, donc un שָׁר tout seul veut déjà dire « il chante ».

Two verbs, one of them frozen. רוֹצֶה agrees with the subject in gender and number; the verb that follows stays in the infinitive whoever is speaking — הֵן רוֹצוֹת לָבוֹא, not רוֹצוֹת בָּאוֹת. The negation belongs to רוֹצֶה and goes in front of it: לֹא רוֹצֶה לָשִׂים. Leaving the infinitive out leaves the sentence unfinished, since רוֹצֶה on its own does not say what is wanted.Deux verbes, dont un figé. רוֹצֶה s'accorde avec le sujet en genre et en nombre ; le verbe qui suit reste à l'infinitif quel que soit celui qui parle — הֵן רוֹצוֹת לָבוֹא, et non רוֹצוֹת בָּאוֹת. La négation appartient à רוֹצֶה et se place devant lui : לֹא רוֹצֶה לָשִׂים. Omettre l'infinitif laisse la phrase inachevée, puisque רוֹצֶה seul ne dit pas ce qu'on veut.

Eleven of these twelve are hollow verbs and start with לָ־. לִבְדּוֹק is the odd one out: its root ב.ד.ק keeps all three letters, so it follows the ordinary pa'al pattern with לִ־.Onze de ces douze verbes sont creux et commencent par לָ־. לִבְדּוֹק est l'exception : sa racine ב.ד.ק garde ses trois lettres, donc il suit le schéma pa'al ordinaire avec לִ־.

The conjugated verb becomes an infinitive and רוֹצֶה takes over the agreement. Nothing else in the sentence moves.Le verbe conjugué devient un infinitif et רוֹצֶה reprend l'accord. Rien d'autre ne bouge dans la phrase.
Only רוֹצֶה moves. Four forms cover every subject: רוֹצֶה for one man, רוֹצָה for one woman, רוֹצִים for a masculine or mixed group, רוֹצוֹת for a group of women.Seul רוֹצֶה change. Quatre formes couvrent tous les sujets : רוֹצֶה pour un homme, רוֹצָה pour une femme, רוֹצִים pour un groupe masculin ou mixte, רוֹצוֹת pour un groupe de femmes.
Three nouns here end in ־וֹת and are masculine anyway — שׁוּלְחָנוֹת, רְחוֹבוֹת, מְלוֹנוֹת — so the adjective ends in ־ִים. נָשִׁים does the reverse. The ending of the noun never decides the ending of the adjective; the gender does.Trois noms de cette liste finissent en ־וֹת et sont pourtant masculins — שׁוּלְחָנוֹת, רְחוֹבוֹת, מְלוֹנוֹת — donc l'adjectif finit en ־ִים. נָשִׁים fait l'inverse. La terminaison du nom ne décide jamais de celle de l'adjectif ; c'est le genre qui décide.
Going back down, three things change together: אֵלֶּה becomes זֶה or זֹאת, the noun loses its plural ending, and the adjective follows. אֲנָשִׁים goes back to אִישׁ, נָשִׁים to אִשָּׁה.En redescendant, trois choses changent ensemble : אֵלֶּה devient זֶה ou זֹאת, le nom perd sa terminaison de pluriel, et l'adjectif suit. אֲנָשִׁים redevient אִישׁ, נָשִׁים redevient אִשָּׁה.
מַחְבֶּרֶת, דֶּלֶת and מַפָּה are feminine, so they take יָפָה, גְּדוֹלָה, קְטַנָּה. עֵט, עִפָּרוֹן, מְחַדֵּד, מַחַק and כַּדּוּר are masculine. When a noun's gender is not obvious, the demonstrative in front of it gives it away: זֶה is masculine, זֹאת feminine.מַחְבֶּרֶת, דֶּלֶת et מַפָּה sont féminins, d'où יָפָה, גְּדוֹלָה, קְטַנָּה. עֵט, עִפָּרוֹן, מְחַדֵּד, מַחַק et כַּדּוּר sont masculins. Quand le genre d'un nom n'est pas évident, le démonstratif devant lui le trahit : זֶה est masculin, זֹאת féminin.
Three words agree in every one of these sentences, not two: the demonstrative, the noun and the adjective. אֵלֶּה serves both plurals, so it is the only one of the three that does not tell you the gender.Dans chacune de ces phrases, ce sont trois mots qui s'accordent, pas deux : le démonstratif, le nom et l'adjectif. אֵלֶּה sert aux deux pluriels, c'est donc le seul des trois qui ne dit pas le genre.
There is no verb in any of these sentences. Hebrew joins a subject to a noun phrase with nothing in between, so הוּא תַּלְמִיד טוֹב is a complete sentence: "he is a good pupil".Aucune de ces phrases n'a de verbe. L'hébreu relie un sujet à un groupe nominal sans rien entre les deux, donc הוּא תַּלְמִיד טוֹב est une phrase complète : « il est un bon élève ».
Three of these plurals do not follow their singular's shape: בַּיִת gives בָּתִּים, דֶּלֶת gives דְּלָתוֹת, חֶדֶר gives חֲדָרִים. The adjective still agrees with the gender, so בָּתִּים חֲדָשִׁים and דְּלָתוֹת יָפוֹת.Trois de ces pluriels ne suivent pas la forme de leur singulier : בַּיִת donne בָּתִּים, דֶּלֶת donne דְּלָתוֹת, חֶדֶר donne חֲדָרִים. L'adjectif s'accorde quand même avec le genre, d'où בָּתִּים חֲדָשִׁים et דְּלָתוֹת יָפוֹת.
