Verbs whose root ends in ה, and a boy who wants nothingDes verbes dont la racine finit par ה, et un enfant qui ne veut rien
Eight verbs built the same way — עוֹשֶׂה, שׁוֹתֶה, רוֹאֶה, קוֹנֶה, בּוֹנֶה, רוֹצֶה, עוֹנֶה, עוֹלֶה — where the ה of the root never surfaces in the present and every infinitive ends in ־וֹת. Then קַר and חַם, a doctor's visit with a child who wants nothing at all, and four exercises that put an infinitive after רוֹצֶה without ever letting it agree.
FormsFormesקְבוּצָה ג' — verbs whose root ends in הקְבוּצָה ג' — les verbes dont la racine finit par ה
Eight verbs, one pattern. The ה of the root never appears in the present: what is left of it is a vowel, ־ֶה in the masculine singular and ־ָה in the feminine, and nothing at all before ־ִים and ־וֹת. The infinitive of every one of them ends in ־וֹת. Where the root starts with ע the prefix opens from לִ־ to לַ־, which is why לַעֲשׂוֹת, לַעֲנוֹת and לַעֲלוֹת look unlike לִשְׁתּוֹת and לִקְנוֹת while behaving identically.

FormsFormesקַר and חַם — two adjectives that agree differentlyקַר et חַם — deux adjectifs qui ne s'accordent pas pareil
Both are one syllable in the masculine singular and both change as soon as they agree, but not in the same way. קַר lengthens its vowel and adds the ending — קָרָה, קָרִים, קָרוֹת. חַם doubles its מ instead, so a dagesh appears in every form except the masculine singular: חַמָּה, חַמִּים, חַמּוֹת. The pair works for weather, drinks and food alike: שְׁתִיָּה קָרָה, יוֹם חַם.Tous les deux tiennent en une syllabe au masculin singulier et tous les deux changent dès qu'ils s'accordent, mais pas de la même façon. קַר allonge sa voyelle et ajoute la terminaison — קָרָה, קָרִים, קָרוֹת. חַם redouble son מ à la place, si bien qu'un dagesh apparaît dans toutes les formes sauf au masculin singulier : חַמָּה, חַמִּים, חַמּוֹת. La paire sert aussi bien pour le temps que pour les boissons et la nourriture : שְׁתִיָּה קָרָה, יוֹם חַם.

VocabularyVocabulaireNothing at allRien de rien
Both words need לֹא on the verb, the way French needs « ne » with « rien »: הוּא לֹא רוֹצֶה שׁוּם דָּבָר. Alone, as the answer to a question, they stand on their own: מָה אַתָּה רוֹצֶה? — כְּלוּם.Les deux mots réclament לֹא sur le verbe, comme le français réclame « ne » avec « rien » : הוּא לֹא רוֹצֶה שׁוּם דָּבָר. Seuls, en réponse à une question, ils tiennent debout tout seuls : מָה אַתָּה רוֹצֶה? — כְּלוּם.

VocabularyVocabulaireWords to recognise in cursive as fast as in printDes mots à reconnaître en cursive aussi vite qu'en imprimé
Cursive Hebrew and printed Hebrew look nothing alike, and knowing a word in one does not mean you will catch it in the other. These eleven are the ones worth recognising at a glance either way.L'hébreu cursif et l'hébreu imprimé ne se ressemblent pas, et connaître un mot dans l'un ne veut pas dire qu'on le reconnaîtra dans l'autre. Ces onze-là valent la peine d'être reconnus d'un coup d'œil dans les deux.

NotesNotesCorrectionsCorrections
In the exercise where only the subject changes, items 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 were written without לֹא. Rewriting a negative sentence does not turn it positive: מִיכָאֵל לֹא רוֹצֶה לִשְׁתּוֹת, אַתֶּן לֹא רוֹצוֹת לַעֲנוֹת, שָׂרָה לֹא רוֹצָה לַעֲשׂוֹת, מִיכָאֵל וְרִבְקָה לֹא רוֹצִים לִקְנוֹת, הַתַּלְמִידוֹת לֹא רוֹצוֹת לִשְׁתּוֹת. Items 2, 3 and 5 keep it, so the rule was already there.
In the same exercise, item 7 stops at רוֹצִים לק. The infinitive is לִקְנוֹת and it still needs its object: מִיכָאֵל וְרִבְקָה לֹא רוֹצִים לִקְנוֹת סֶנְדְוִיץ'.Dans le même exercice, l'item 7 s'arrête à רוֹצִים לק. L'infinitif est לִקְנוֹת et il lui faut encore son complément : מִיכָאֵל וְרִבְקָה לֹא רוֹצִים לִקְנוֹת סֶנְדְוִיץ'.
In the exercise that adds רוֹצֶה, item 1 was answered with הִיא. The instruction rewrites the sentence, so the sentence keeps its subject: אֶסְתֵּר רוֹצָה לִשְׁתּוֹת מִיץ תַּפּוּזִים. הִיא is not wrong Hebrew, it just answers a different instruction.Dans l'exercice qui ajoute רוֹצֶה, l'item 1 est rempli avec הִיא. La consigne réécrit la phrase, donc la phrase garde son sujet : אֶסְתֵּר רוֹצָה לִשְׁתּוֹת מִיץ תַּפּוּזִים. הִיא n'est pas un hébreu fautif, ça répond simplement à une autre consigne.
NotesNotesKey pointsPoints clés
The verbs of קְבוּצָה ג' have ה as the third letter of their root, and that ה never appears in the present. What you see is the vowel it left behind: ־ֶה in the masculine singular, ־ָה in the feminine, and nothing at all before ־ִים and ־וֹת.Les verbes de קְבוּצָה ג' ont ה comme troisième lettre de racine, et ce ה n'apparaît jamais au présent. Ce qu'on voit, c'est la voyelle qu'il a laissée : ־ֶה au masculin singulier, ־ָה au féminin, et rien du tout devant ־ִים et ־וֹת.
Every infinitive in this group ends in ־וֹת: קוֹנֶה → לִקְנוֹת, רוֹאֶה → לִרְאוֹת, בּוֹנֶה → לִבְנוֹת, שׁוֹתֶה → לִשְׁתּוֹת. Meeting an unknown infinitive in ־וֹת tells you its present before you look it up.Tous les infinitifs de ce groupe finissent en ־וֹת: קוֹנֶה → לִקְנוֹת, רוֹאֶה → לִרְאוֹת, בּוֹנֶה → לִבְנוֹת, שׁוֹתֶה → לִשְׁתּוֹת. Croiser un infinitif inconnu en ־וֹת te dit son présent avant même de le chercher.
When the root starts with ע, the prefix opens from לִ־ to לַ־ and a chataf patach follows on the ע: לַעֲשׂוֹת, לַעֲנוֹת, לַעֲלוֹת. The verb itself behaves exactly like the others.Quand la racine commence par ע, le préfixe s'ouvre de לִ־ en לַ־ et un chataf patach suit sur le ע: לַעֲשׂוֹת, לַעֲנוֹת, לַעֲלוֹת. Le verbe lui-même se comporte exactement comme les autres.
רוֹצֶה carries the agreement for the pair and the infinitive after it never changes: אַתֶּן רוֹצוֹת לַעֲנוֹת, הֵם רוֹצִים לַעֲנוֹת, הִיא רוֹצָה לַעֲנוֹת.רוֹצֶה porte l'accord pour les deux et l'infinitif qui suit ne change jamais : אַתֶּן רוֹצוֹת לַעֲנוֹת, הֵם רוֹצִים לַעֲנוֹת, הִיא רוֹצָה לַעֲנוֹת.
לֹא goes in front of the conjugated verb, never in front of the infinitive: הוּא לֹא רוֹצֶה לִקְנוֹת, not הוּא רוֹצֶה לֹא לִקְנוֹת.לֹא se place devant le verbe conjugué, jamais devant l'infinitif : הוּא לֹא רוֹצֶה לִקְנוֹת, et non הוּא רוֹצֶה לֹא לִקְנוֹת.
שׁוּם דָּבָר and כְּלוּם still need לֹא on the verb: הוּא לֹא רוֹצֶה שׁוּם דָּבָר. Hebrew doubles the negation here exactly as French does.שׁוּם דָּבָר et כְּלוּם réclament quand même לֹא sur le verbe : הוּא לֹא רוֹצֶה שׁוּם דָּבָר. L'hébreu double ici la négation exactement comme le français.
אֶת goes before a definite direct object and nowhere else: לִרְאוֹת אֶת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, קוֹרֵא אֶת כׇּל הַסְּפָרִים — but לִרְאוֹת סֶרֶט with no אֶת, because it is not a particular film.אֶת se place devant un complément d'objet direct défini, et nulle part ailleurs : לִרְאוֹת אֶת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, קוֹרֵא אֶת כׇּל הַסְּפָרִים — mais לִרְאוֹת סֶרֶט sans אֶת, parce que ce n'est pas un film en particulier.
The prefixes contract with the article: בְּ + הַ gives בַּ (בַּסּוּפֶּרְמַרְקֶט, בַּבַּיִת, בַּמַּדְרֵגוֹת) and לְ + הַ gives לַ or לָ (לַסֶּרֶט, לָאוֹטוֹבּוּס). With no article there is nothing to contract: בְּתֵל אָבִיב, לְכִתָּה ב'.Les préfixes se contractent avec l'article : בְּ + הַ donne בַּ (בַּסּוּפֶּרְמַרְקֶט, בַּבַּיִת, בַּמַּדְרֵגוֹת) et לְ + הַ donne לַ ou לָ (לַסֶּרֶט, לָאוֹטוֹבּוּס). Sans article, il n'y a rien à contracter : בְּתֵל אָבִיב, לְכִתָּה ב'.
קַר agrees by lengthening its vowel and חַם by doubling its מ: קָרָה and חַמָּה, קָרִים and חַמִּים, קָרוֹת and חַמּוֹת.קַר s'accorde en allongeant sa voyelle et חַם en redoublant son מ: קָרָה et חַמָּה, קָרִים et חַמִּים, קָרוֹת et חַמּוֹת.

A four-form block read as מוֹכֵר / מוֹכֶרֶת / מוֹכְרִים / מוֹכְרוֹת, a seller. The other reading is מוּכָן / מוּכָנָה / מוּכָנִים / מוּכָנוֹת, ready. The feminine singular seems to end in ־ֶת, which fits מוֹכֶרֶת and not מוּכָנָה, but that is not enough to settle it and neither set is recorded here.Un bloc de quatre formes lu מוֹכֵר / מוֹכֶרֶת / מוֹכְרִים / מוֹכְרוֹת, un vendeur. L'autre lecture est מוּכָן / מוּכָנָה / מוּכָנִים / מוּכָנוֹת, prêt. Le féminin singulier semble finir en ־ֶת, ce qui va avec מוֹכֶרֶת et pas avec מוּכָנָה, mais ça ne suffit pas à trancher et aucune des deux séries n'est enregistrée ici.
The fourth infinitive of the ־וֹת list, read as לִבְכּוֹת, to cry. The other reading is לְחַכּוֹת, to wait. They are different binyanim and different roots, so the answer decides which family the word belongs to — and לְחַכּוֹת takes לְ, which would put it outside this group altogether.Le quatrième infinitif de la liste en ־וֹת, lu לִבְכּוֹת, pleurer. L'autre lecture est לְחַכּוֹת, attendre. Ce sont deux binyanim et deux racines différents, donc la réponse décide de la famille à laquelle le mot appartient — et לְחַכּוֹת prend לְ, ce qui le mettrait complètement hors de ce groupe.
The answer to the fourth item of the exercise that adds רוֹצֶה, read as לַעֲשׂוֹת. If it is in fact לַעֲנוֹת it is the wrong verb there: שִׁעוּרֵי בַּיִת goes with לַעֲשׂוֹת, and לַעֲנוֹת needs עַל הַשְּׁאֵלוֹת after it.La réponse au quatrième item de l'exercice qui ajoute רוֹצֶה, lue לַעֲשׂוֹת. Si c'est en fait לַעֲנוֹת, c'est le mauvais verbe ici : שִׁעוּרֵי בַּיִת va avec לַעֲשׂוֹת, et לַעֲנוֹת demande עַל הַשְּׁאֵלוֹת derrière lui.
