Only the first word conjugatesSeul le premier mot se conjugue
The structure that runs through the whole day: צָרִיךְ, יָכוֹל, רוֹצֶה, חַיָּב, אוֹהֵב followed by an infinitive. Only the first word agrees with who is speaking; the infinitive never moves. With it come a dozen pi'el verbs (לְחַפֵּשׂ, לְשַׁלֵּם, לְקַבֵּל, לְצַלֵּם, לְטַיֵּל, לְבַקֵּשׁ…), the infinitives that lose their yod (יוֹשֵׁב → לָשֶׁבֶת), a dialogue at the ulpan office, and Jerusalem.La structure qui traverse toute la journée : צָרִיךְ, יָכוֹל, רוֹצֶה, חַיָּב, אוֹהֵב suivis d'un infinitif. Seul le premier mot s'accorde avec celui qui parle ; l'infinitif ne bouge jamais. Avec elle arrivent une douzaine de verbes pi'el (לְחַפֵּשׂ, לְשַׁלֵּם, לְקַבֵּל, לְצַלֵּם, לְטַיֵּל, לְבַקֵּשׁ…), les infinitifs qui perdent leur yod (יוֹשֵׁב → לָשֶׁבֶת), un dialogue au bureau de l'oulpan, et Jérusalem.
NotesNotesThe one structure of the dayLa structure du jour
Five words take an infinitive after them: צָרִיךְ (must, need to), יָכוֹל (can), רוֹצֶה (want), חַיָּב (have to), אוֹהֵב (like). Only that first word agrees with the person — the infinitive stays exactly as it is, whoever is speaking.Cinq mots se font suivre d'un infinitif : צָרִיךְ (il faut, avoir besoin de), יָכוֹל (pouvoir), רוֹצֶה (vouloir), חַיָּב (devoir), אוֹהֵב (aimer). Seul ce premier mot s'accorde avec la personne — l'infinitif reste exactement tel quel, quel que soit celui qui parle.
So the agreement work happens once, at the front: הַסְּטוּדֶנְטִית חַיֶּבֶת לְשַׁלֵּם, הַיְלָדִים יְכוֹלִים לְשַׂחֵק, אַתֶּן אוֹהֲבוֹת לְצַלֵּם. Change who is speaking and only the first word moves.L'accord se fait donc une seule fois, en tête : הַסְּטוּדֶנְטִית חַיֶּבֶת לְשַׁלֵּם, הַיְלָדִים יְכוֹלִים לְשַׂחֵק, אַתֶּן אוֹהֲבוֹת לְצַלֵּם. Changez celui qui parle et seul le premier mot bouge.
The infinitive is called שֵׁם פֹּעַל, literally the name of the verb — and that is what it behaves like here, a name rather than an action being performed by anyone.L'infinitif s'appelle שֵׁם פֹּעַל, littéralement le nom du verbe — et c'est bien ainsi qu'il se comporte ici, un nom plutôt qu'une action accomplie par quelqu'un.
FormsFormesיָכוֹל and חַיָּב — the two new onesיָכוֹל et חַיָּב — les deux nouveaux
רוֹצֶה and אוֹהֵב are already known and צָרִיךְ came yesterday. These two are new, and both agree like an adjective rather than a verb.רוֹצֶה et אוֹהֵב sont déjà connus et צָרִיךְ est arrivé hier. Ces deux-là sont nouveaux, et tous deux s'accordent comme un adjectif, pas comme un verbe.

NotesNotesInfinitives that lose the yodLes infinitifs qui perdent le yod
A group of verbs whose present tense begins with יוֹ־ drops that yod in the infinitive and ends in ־ֶת instead: יוֹשֵׁב → לָשֶׁבֶת, יוֹרֵד → לָרֶדֶת, יוֹצֵא → לָצֵאת, יוֹדֵעַ → לָדַעַת. They are called פ"י, first-letter-yod.Un groupe de verbes dont le présent commence par יוֹ־ perd ce yod à l'infinitif et se termine en ־ֶת : יוֹשֵׁב → לָשֶׁבֶת, יוֹרֵד → לָרֶדֶת, יוֹצֵא → לָצֵאת, יוֹדֵעַ → לָדַעַת. On les appelle פ"י, yod en première lettre.
Three more behave the same way without being in that family, and are worth learning as they come: לָקַחַת (present לוֹקֵחַ), לָתֵת (present נוֹתֵן), and לְהִיכָּנֵס (present נִכְנָס).Trois autres se comportent pareil sans appartenir à cette famille, et s'apprennent au fil de leur arrivée : לָקַחַת (présent לוֹקֵחַ), לָתֵת (présent נוֹתֵן), et לְהִיכָּנֵס (présent נִכְנָס).
