The numbers agree backwardsLes nombres s'accordent à l'envers
The whole day turns on one thing: a masculine noun takes the long number ending in ־ָה, and a feminine noun takes the short one. Everything else follows from it — the exercise on p. 108, telling the time (שָׁעָה is feminine, so the clock counts feminine), and שְׁנֵי or שְׁתֵּי in front of a noun. Also: אֶת before a definite object, and a handful of verbs about laughing.Toute la journée tient à une chose : un nom masculin prend le nombre long en ־ָה, un nom féminin prend le court. Tout le reste en découle — le targil de la p. 108, l'heure (שָׁעָה est féminin, donc l'heure se compte au féminin), et שְׁנֵי ou שְׁתֵּי devant un nom. Et aussi : אֶת devant un complément défini, et quelques verbes autour du rire.
NotesNotesThe rule that governs the dayLa règle qui gouverne la journée
Hebrew numbers agree the opposite way round to the intuition. A MASCULINE noun takes the number that ends in ־ָה — שְׁלוֹשָׁה יָמִים, three days. A FEMININE noun takes the short form — שָׁלוֹשׁ קוֹמוֹת, three floors. The ending that looks feminine belongs to the masculine, and that is the whole trap.Les nombres hébreux s'accordent à l'inverse de l'intuition. Un nom MASCULIN prend le nombre qui finit en ־ָה — שְׁלוֹשָׁה יָמִים, trois jours. Un nom FÉMININ prend la forme courte — שָׁלוֹשׁ קוֹמוֹת, trois étages. La terminaison qui a l'air féminine appartient au masculin, et c'est là tout le piège.
So the number cannot be chosen until the gender of the noun is known. יוֹם is masculine and קוֹמָה is feminine, so the same 'three' is written two different ways depending on what follows it.On ne peut donc pas choisir le nombre avant de connaître le genre du nom. יוֹם est masculin et קוֹמָה est féminin, donc le même « trois » s'écrit de deux façons selon ce qui suit.
Only 1 and 2 behave differently: אֶחָד and אַחַת follow their noun rather than precede it, and 'two' has a special form used in front of a noun — שְׁנֵי for masculine, שְׁתֵּי for feminine.Seuls 1 et 2 se comportent autrement : אֶחָד et אַחַת suivent leur nom au lieu de le précéder, et « deux » a une forme spéciale devant un nom — שְׁנֵי au masculin, שְׁתֵּי au féminin.

Read each row as a pair: the left-hand column goes with a masculine noun, the right-hand one with a feminine noun.Lisez chaque ligne comme une paire : une colonne va avec un nom masculin, l’autre avec un nom féminin.

The unit is what carries the gender; עָשָׂר or עֶשְׂרֵה is simply added after it. So if the unit is known, the teen is too.C'est l'unité qui porte le genre ; עָשָׂר ou עֶשְׂרֵה s'ajoute simplement derrière. Donc si l'unité est sue, la dizaine l'est aussi.

NotesNotesוְ becomes וּ inside a compound numberוְ devient וּ dans un nombre composé
In a number like twenty-two, the 'and' is not always וְ. Before ב, ו, מ or פ, and before any letter carrying a shva, it becomes וּ.Dans un nombre comme vingt-deux, le « et » n'est pas toujours וְ. Devant ב, ו, מ ou פ, et devant toute lettre portant un shva, il devient וּ.
עֶשְׂרִים וְאֶחָד — 21, plain וְ before א. But עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁנַיִם — 22, and עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁלוֹשָׁה — 23, because שׁ carries a shva. And עֶשְׂרִים וַחֲמִשָּׁה — 25.עֶשְׂרִים וְאֶחָד — 21, וְ simple devant א. Mais עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁנַיִם — 22, et עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁלוֹשָׁה — 23, parce que שׁ porte un shva. Et עֶשְׂרִים וַחֲמִשָּׁה — 25.

NotesNotesThe clock counts feminineL'heure se compte au féminin
שָׁעָה, hour, is feminine, so the time is always said with the feminine numbers: שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה, not שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר.שָׁעָה, heure, est féminin, donc l'heure se dit toujours avec les nombres féminins : שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה, pas שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר.
A quarter past is וָרֶבַע added after the hour — שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה וָרֶבַע, quarter past twelve. A quarter to is רֶבַע לְ before the coming hour — רֶבַע לְאַחַת, quarter to one, which is 12:45.« Et quart » se dit וָרֶבַע après l'heure — שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה וָרֶבַע, midi et quart. « Moins le quart » se dit רֶבַע לְ devant l'heure qui vient — רֶבַע לְאַחַת, une heure moins le quart, c'est-à-dire 12 h 45.

NotesNotesאֶת, and when it cannot be left outאֶת, et quand on ne peut pas l’omettre
אֶת marks a direct object that is DEFINITE. If the thing being acted on carries ה, or is a name, אֶת must stand in front of it.אֶת marque un complément d'objet direct DÉFINI. Si la chose sur laquelle on agit porte ה, ou si c'est un nom propre, אֶת doit se placer devant.
אֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת אֶת הָעוּגָה — I like the cake. הָעוּגָה is definite, so אֶת is not optional. Without it the sentence is wrong, and this is the one the teacher circled.אֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת אֶת הָעוּגָה — j'aime le gâteau. הָעוּגָה est défini, donc אֶת n'est pas facultatif. Sans lui la phrase est fausse, et c'est celle que la prof a entourée.
An indefinite object takes nothing: אֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת עוּגָה, I like cake, has no אֶת at all.Un complément indéfini ne prend rien : אֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת עוּגָה, j'aime le gâteau (en général), n'a pas de אֶת du tout.
