Three questions about place, and each one drags its own preposition behind it: מֵאַיִן? is answered with מ, אֵיפֹה? with ב, לְאָן? with ל. Get the question right and the answer half-writes itself. Around that: הוֹלֵךְ on foot against נוֹסֵעַ by vehicle, six more פִּעֵל verbs, the two verbs for wishing and blessing, the clock as it is actually spoken, and a reading about a new immigrant that is then said again about a woman, so every word that agrees has to move.
Four lines addressed to one woman, so every form in them is feminine singular: יְקָרָה, לָךְ, שֶׁאַתְּ רוֹצָה. Written to a man it would be יָקָר, לְךָ, שֶׁאַתָּה רוֹצֶה — the message is the same, six letters change.Quatre lignes adressées à une femme, donc tout y est au féminin singulier : יְקָרָה, לָךְ, שֶׁאַתְּ רוֹצָה. Écrit à un homme ce serait יָקָר, לְךָ, שֶׁאַתָּה רוֹצֶה — même message, six lettres changent.

Two פִּעֵל verbs used for the same social moment. לְאַחֵל is what you do TO a person — you wish them something, so it takes לְ: אֲנַחְנוּ מְאַחֲלִים לָךְ. לְבָרֵךְ takes its object straight, with no preposition, and covers both blessing and congratulating.Deux verbes פִּעֵל pour le même moment social. לְאַחֵל est ce qu'on fait À quelqu'un — on lui souhaite quelque chose, donc il prend לְ: אֲנַחְנוּ מְאַחֲלִים לָךְ. לְבָרֵךְ prend son complément directement, sans préposition, et couvre aussi bien bénir que féliciter.

The same shape as the ones already met — infinitive in לְ־, present in מְ־, three letters that never move. The class went back over לְדַבֵּר, לְשַׁלֵּם, לְחַפֵּשׂ, לְסַפֵּר, לְצַלֵּם, לְטַיֵּל, לְקַבֵּל, לְאַחֵר and לְשַׂחֵק before adding these six. Note the pair לְשַׂחֵק and לְנַגֵּן: one is playing a game, the other is playing an instrument, and Hebrew will not let you use one for the other.

Picking מֵאַיִן, אֵיפֹה or לְאָן is only half the exercise. A question needs its subject and its verb behind it, and the verb agrees with the subject — הֵן takes a feminine plural, מֹשֶׁה וְחַנָּה takes a masculine plural. Hebrew also allows the verb before the subject: אֵיפֹה גָּרִים מֹשֶׁה וְחַנָּה? is just as good.Choisir entre מֵאַיִן, אֵיפֹה ou לְאָן ne fait que la moitié de l'exercice. Une question a besoin de son sujet et de son verbe derrière elle, et le verbe s'accorde avec le sujet — הֵן prend un féminin pluriel, מֹשֶׁה וְחַנָּה un masculin pluriel. L'hébreu autorise aussi le verbe avant le sujet : אֵיפֹה גָּרִים מֹשֶׁה וְחַנָּה ? est tout aussi bon.
Read it once for the walking-and-driving contrast alone: Yosef walks to the supermarket and drives to Jerusalem, one line apart.Lis-le une fois rien que pour le contraste à pied / en véhicule : Yossef va au supermarché à pied et à Jérusalem en voiture, à une ligne d'intervalle.
The answer reuses the question's verb, so the only real work is the agreement. יוֹסֵף וְשָׂרָה together are הֵם, masculine plural, even though one of them is a woman.La réponse réutilise le verbe de la question, donc le seul vrai travail est l'accord. יוֹסֵף וְשָׂרָה ensemble font הֵם, masculin pluriel, même si l'une des deux est une femme.
Two questions that differ only by the verb, and the verb decides the destination: you walk to one kind of place and drive to the other.Deux questions qui ne diffèrent que par le verbe, et c'est le verbe qui décide de la destination : on va à pied à l'une, en véhicule à l'autre.
Eight lines. Read them for the question words they do answer: who, where from, where, what, which language, how, about what. The two the reading never needs are לְאָן and לְמִי — those the dialogue drills.Huit lignes. Lisez-les pour les mots interrogatifs auxquels elles répondent : qui, d'où, où, quoi, quelle langue, comment, sur quoi. Les deux dont le texte n'a pas besoin sont לְאָן et לְמִי — ceux-là, c'est le dialogue qui les travaille.
Every answer is a sentence lifted from the text with its word order kept. That is the point of the exercise: you are not composing, you are learning to find the clause the question is pointing at.Chaque réponse est une phrase reprise du texte avec son ordre des mots intact. C'est tout l'intérêt de l'exercice : on ne compose pas, on apprend à trouver la proposition que la question désigne.
Say the text again with a woman as its subject and count what has to move: the pronoun, every verb, and every adjective. What does NOT move is worth as much as what does — יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הִיא עִיר הַבִּירָה is untouched because its subject was never Yosef, and מְצֻיָּן stays as it is because here it is an adverb, not an adjective.Redis le texte avec une femme comme sujet et compte ce qui doit bouger : le pronom, chaque verbe, chaque adjectif. Ce qui ne bouge PAS vaut autant que le reste — יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הִיא עִיר הַבִּירָה est intact parce que son sujet n'a jamais été Yossef, et מְצֻיָּן reste tel quel parce qu'ici c'est un adverbe, pas un adjectif.
Two words, and both of them agree. Jonas is an עוֹלֶה חָדָשׁ; a woman in the same class is an עוֹלָה חֲדָשָׁה.Deux mots, et tous les deux s'accordent. Jonas est un עוֹלֶה חָדָשׁ ; une femme de la même classe est une עוֹלָה חֲדָשָׁה.
